The most common, and a budget option, are plain or metallised plastic. Models made from simple plastic are cheaper but less durable because of weaker connections between the hose and the shower head.

Metallized plastic looks like chrome-plated metal, is more expensive, and connectors are now usually themselves made from metal compounds. The material used to manufacture stationary wall-mounted and ceiling-mounted models is usually metal, although the shower heads themselves are diverse both in form and in finishing. They can even be decorated with tempered quartz glass, natural stone and other such finishes.

The design of shower heads is simple. The simplest handheld model is a container with a large number of apertures. These holes will eventually become clogged with lime scale and other deposits. The latest models avoid this problem by adding rubber inserts meaning that the nozzles are more easily cleaned of deposits.

Modern devices are equipped with rotary switches for regulating the supply of water, which are located at the very head of the shower head before the water supply, or can have push-buttons placed on the top of the head.

Now even low cost models can have six modes – massage jets, both soft and quite intense, and with varied air supply.

Thus, the choice of construction comes down to convenience and budget, and also can be determined by the size of the shower.
